Bencic joins Marc Rosset, who won the 1992 gold medal at the Barcelona Games, as the second Swiss gold-medal champion.

On Sunday, Bencic will play for the rare golden double. Bencic is bidding to join Venus Williams, Serena Williams and Nicolas Massu as the fourth champion in the modern era to sweep gold medals in singles and doubles at the same Olympics.

Bencic and partner Viktorija Golubic face French Open doubles champions Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova in the gold-medal doubles match five years after Bencic’s mentor, Martina Hingis, partnered Timea Bacsinszky to win the doubles silver medal for Switzerland at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Champions ranging from 2016 Rio gold-medalist Monica Puig to Billie Jean King offered Bencic congratulations on social media.
